Dominating NBA big men are a thing of the past...or are they?!?!

Dr. Apollo discusses the big man situation in the NBA!

Shaq ATTACK!
I think it’s time we all agree that the days of NBA big men dominating the game is over (and has been for a while)!  Gone are the days of Shaquille O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Tim Duncan dictating the ebb and flow of the games and in particular the playoffs.
Shaq's playoff career numbers were 25.2 PPG, 12.1 RPG, and shot 56% from the floor.
Hakeem put up 25.9 PPG, 11.2 RPG, and 53% from the floor.
Duncan has averaged 23.3 PPG, 12.6 RPG, and has shot 50% during his playoff career and during this year’s playoffs Duncan is putting up 17.8 PPG and 11.2 RPG (with two sweeps) at the age of 37!
Take a look at the “bigs” from this year’s conference semifinals:

Roy Hibbert: 13.8 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 47% shooting
Tyson Chandler: 6.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 59% shooting
Joakim Noah: 10.8 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 44% shooting
Chris Bosh: 13.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 52% shooting
Andrew Bogut: 7.5 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 59% shooting
Serge Ibaka: 12.8 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 44% shooting
Marc Gasol 18.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 48% shooting
                                and his teammate
Zach Randolph: 19.7 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 51% shooting
Gasol/Randolph finished off the favored Thunder to advance to their 1st Western Conference Finals thanks to their 2 bruisers down low.  Duncan’s Spurs swept the Grizz and are now in the NBA Finals…so yeah, there’s that!
No matter how much the NBA changes, the goal is to still get the ball in the hoop in the most efficient way…which just happens to be really close to the basket.  Unless you employ the likes of LeBron James or Michael Jordan, acquiring a dominant big man is the key to rings.  Hence the reason the Spurs will be battling the Heat for the ship!
#jumphookem2death
Now finding said big man is another story in itself, especially when former Denver Nuggets Head coach  openly admits that his best post player was 6’ 2” Andre Miller!
Birdman DOWN!
Before you even jump and yell about Roy Hibbert torching the Heat, just know that everyone, including Roy, didn’t see this kind of play coming from him.  Roy only averaged 11.9 PPG and 8.3 RPG in the regular season and against the Heat those numbers ballooned to 21.4 PPG and 10.8 RPG, due in large part to the Heat throwing Chris Bosh, Chris “Birdman, Birdman” Anderson, and Udonis Haslem at him.  But watching Roy come of age was like watching a rose blossom in the desert…unexpected.

No matter how you swing it, big men dominating in the paint are turning into the days of yore.

Small ball has effectively changed the way teams view big men…essentially relegating the bigs to specialty roles.  Can you rebound? Can you spread the floor? Can you protect the rim? Can you switch on pick and rolls and play a smaller man?  If you’re able to do one of these roles, then you can find yourself employed by many of the small ball teams; however, if you’re able to do at least two of these then you’re looking at a pretty payday.

The OKC Thunder rolled the dice and lost BIG time by deciding to keep Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins over James Hardin!  We know how this played out…Hardin goes to Houston (and gets PAID) and the Thunder lost their hold of the West (yes Westbrook’s knee injury hurt them as well)!

Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, and Al Jefferson were the three highest paid big men in the NBA this year and only the Lakers made it into the playoffs and they were swept by the Spurs.  This isn’t to say that these guys are bad and not worth the money (Philly fans might disagree since Bynum never played a single game for them), but discovering the Ark was even difficult for Indiana Jones.
Many of the best teams in NBA don't have a traditional center becuase they've mastered the small ball mentality and would much rather take advantage of the corner 3's and slash and kick instead of the traditional back to the basket bruisers of yesteryear.

NBA big men may not garner the same level of reverence as before, but their importance is seen in other variables on the court!

Steve Urkel...A Fashion Icon?!?!?

Steven. Q. Urkel.
Steve Urkel was the 90’s. Period. Point. Blank.
Jaleel White’s Steve went from a one time guest spot to lead role in TGIF/ABC’s Family Matters (which could’ve also been called Black Full House).
Even though Urkel’s popularity swelled throughout the years, he was still a nerd of legend! Stereotypical large glasses, tight jeans, suspenders, and pocket protector were standard fare for Steve and not once did America look at him as a teen heartthrob or fashion icon.  This all makes sense because Steve first appeared in December 1989!

Fast forward 24 years to 2013, and you realize Urkel was just a man way ahead of his time.  Just think about it…chic geek is an incredibly popular style right now!  If the Steve Urkel’s character was around today, he would have his own clothing line a la Russell Westbrook’s Levi Collection.

These are what Steve Urkel specs looked like:

In ’89 these things were a joke!  In 2013, you have stars such as Dwyane Wade, Justin Timberlake, and Selena Gomez willingly rocking the large framed-rims.

That’s not all!  Urkel was wearing skinny jeans before skinny jeans even knew about skinny jeans.  Back then they were just considered tight ass jeans though!
Now if you go into almost any retail store, skinny jeans are commonplace.  Even the suspenders are acceptable in common garb.

Now I’m not here to hate on the chic geek trend, but it’s only appropriate to recognize the brilliance that is Steven Q Urkel… a man ahead of his time.

But even the Urk Man wouldn't be caught dead wearing this nonsense!

Xbox One reveal an EPIC FAIL (so far)

I don’t even know where to start after digesting everything that is/was the Xbox One reveal.  Normally, I would start with the wow factor, but there wasn’t any!  This isn’t the ravings of a mad fanboy, but one from a gamer who truly enjoys being immersed in fantastic games no matter the system.   And from the looks of it (albeit a short look) it doesn’t look like Microsoft is for the game, just their money.
I wasn’t pleased with the media/entertainment/TV focus of Xbox One’s reveal, but I’m sure Microsoft is waiting for E3 to satiate the gamers.  But M$ may have lost the new console war before it even starts!
I went from mildly stoked to completely pissed off in a matter of moments with the “reveal” that Xbox One would require all games to be installed on the HDD before playing.  They’ve also confirmed that you will be able to play on multiple systems as long as you’re logged into your profile.  Sounds like a good workaround right, right?  But what about those who aren’t hooked up to the web?  In so many words, I guess they’re just saying “sucks to be you!”
We’re also not getting backwards compatibility because of some technological mumbo jumbo about not using cell processing or some crap.
But to set this whole ship ablaze, M$ has confirmed that they would FULLY SUPPORT used games, but you have to pay a fee in order to play it.  Ok, so maybe they’re thinking a couple bucks, but no these greedy muthaf***as are asking for full, FULL MSRB aka full effin price to play a used effin game.  I’m not a genius in any way, but what they’re saying is that if you buy a used game on Xbox One then you’re stupid!  With this method they might as well call themselves John Locke when they’re really the Smoke Monster trying to kill us all!  Back in October, I wrote a post documenting the rumblings amongst developers being against used games and here we are 7 months later with my nightmares come true!
But at least the new and improved Kinect will be able to read our heartbeat now!

[EDITOR'S NOTE] Microsoft is currently dismissing the rumors of the used game "unlock" fee, so we'll keep our ears to the streets

The Tournament of Couples: Obama region winners

And coming out of the 1st round of The Obama region is:
1) Heathcliff & Clair Huxtable

This one wasn’t even close!  The Huxtable’s won by an overwhelming margin; this may be an open and shut tourney.
9) Kevin Arnold & Winnie Cooper

Kevin & Winnie surprisingly led this won from wire to wire.  Tidas & Yuna may have been the big fish in their conference, but they soon realized they were playing in a much bigger pond.
5) The Joker & Harley Quinn

HHH & and Stephanie may run the WWE, but The Joker and Harley Quinn dominated this matchup.  I guess we know why WWE never ventures to Gotham.
13) Edge & Lita

Seeding wise this is considered an upset, but the Carrie and Mr. Big team always seem to choke when it matters most.
6) Simba & Nala

Not a surprising outcome when lions are matched up against a terrible shooting sheriff and a author/reporter.
14) Goku & Chi-Chi

Super. Sayian.  Nuff said!
10) April O’Neil & Casey Jones

The closest matchup by far, this one was determined by 1 vote!
2) Dan & Roseanne

No contest here. Sara may have helped Michael escape prison, but they couldn’t escape the Dan & Roseanne express.

The Tournament of Couples...Vote for your favorites to advance

We just witnessed one the most exhilarating and unpredictable NCAA tournaments in a very long time.    But what is it about the tourney that makes people crazy?  School pride, right?  For a small few, but it’s really all about the brackets!  In February, I wrote a post for Valentine’s Day about the greatest video game couples.  During that entire process I kept going back to and thinking about the best couples of all time.  But video games don’t necessarily have that many couples to merit a bracket tourney.  Well with the evolution of Apollo’s Gamedom on the horizon, I’m going to give you a sneak peak at what’s to come…here’s the Tournament of the Couples TV/Movie/Video game bracket tournament.

We’re going with a 64 couple single elimination tournament that YOU will be voting on each week starting today.  After each week, I will update the bracket accordingly and the voting will begin again and so on and so forth.

The couples were selected by my team of avid gamers and film/TV watchers; however the seedings were selected by me after arduous research and viewings.  In reality, I just picked the most popular and went from there, but it’s my tourney and I do as I please.  Even though many shows will live on forever through syndication, I’m only including couples from my generation as well.

SPOILERS to follow!

THE OBAMA REGION

§  Cliff and Claire Huxtable were played by Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad and many would consider them to be the prototypical couple.  Both successful in their own rights, but also successful parents of five.  During the 80’s and early 90’s, seeing Cliff and Claire was like watching a recurring dream, hoping that your life would eventually mirror theirs.  Growing up I was always told we were the “Cosby’s” and for a kid growing up no better compliment could be given.
§  What guy hasn’t pretended to be something they’re not, just to get in good with a girl?  I’ve been with my wife almost 10 years and I’m still pretending like I’m cool!  Sure Cloud was pretending to be Zach, but that was because of memory problems.  Nevertheless, Tifa stood by him and helped him regain his memory and helped him save the world!  Now that is a “Round the way” girl.
§  Square has a knack for heartwarming and tragic relationships and Tidas and Yuna are definitely representing the latter.  Tidas was able to traverse time and space a la John Carter to find his true love.  Now unfortunately he was destined to become that world's next villain; however Yuna's love was able to keep Tidas from becoming Sin.  It didn't stop him from disappearing but hey at least he wasn't Sin incarnate.  And Yuna isn’t just some damsel either after Tidas disappeared into wherever land, she searched high and low and finally found him waiting for her.
§  Kevin Arnold and Winnie Cooper were played by Fred Savage and Danica McKellar.  Who doesn’t remember their first love?  That symbol of first love is what made Kevin and Winnie so endearing.  Did they marry, no?  But through and through they stuck
§  The Joker and Harley Quinn have a convoluted relationship.  In reality, The Joker is Harley’s boss, but she is hopelessly devoted to him.  This dynamic is used to both of their advantages at times, but no matter the trouble they find themselves in…it’s always done together.
§  Triple H and Stephanie McMahon are not only married in the WWE universe, but they are a real life couple! Not bad for a former Degenerate to marry the boss’ daughter!  Although not generally seen together on screen as often, these two are still a feared two-some in the “wrasslin’” business.
§  Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big were played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth.  Some may say that these two are the most realistic and adult relationship in the field.  Others may argue that it was the most dysfunctional.  From on again-off again to being stood up at the altar to finally married; these two have run the gamut of every emotion possible.
§  Edge and Lita were both considered bad guys in the WWE, but as a unit you just loved to hate them.  I don’t know if it was their chemistry together or their passion that made them seem as one, but whatever it was it seemed like magic.
§  Simba and Nala were betrothed almost right out of the womb and unlike many arranged marriages these two survived.  These two have triumphed many adversities together because facing problems as a unit is usually a safe bet.  Yeah, Simba ran away, but Nala found him and brought him back to rule his kingdom like he should.
§  Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers-Riley were played by Courtney Cox and David Arquette.  [Courtney Cox also appears later  in this bracket]  After surviving like six different psycho killers, these two can only go up or die at this point.  Unlike many couples in the world, til death actually means something to them. [editor’s note. Courtney Cox and David Arquette divorced in real life after 13 years]
§  Edward Lewis and Vivian Ward were played by Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.  Everyone can dream, right?  Well Vivian’s dream came true when prince charming came to her rescue and swept her off her feet.  We’re going to skip over the fact that she was a street walker completely. Shhh!
§  Even though Goku has saved the universe many times over, Chi-Chi still expects him to remain true to his promises.  As a unit, solidarity is crucial and no matter the situation Chi-Chi trusts that Goku will come through in the end…even in death.
§  Quincy McCall and Monica Wright-McCall were played by Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan.  It’s not uncommon for high school sweethearts to follow each other to college to remain close.  What is uncommon is that those two will eventually marry.  Well these two buck that trend after venturing the world and realizing that they were meant to be together.  Throw in the fact that both played professional basketball and genetic domination rears its head!
§  April O’Neal and Casey Jones initially started up as a love/hate relationship, but like most their mutual respect for each other eventually became love.  Throw in the fact that both of these guys could probably kick most of the field’s ass doesn’t hurt either.
§  Dan and Roseanne were played by John Goodman and Roseanne Barr.  Dan and Roseanne may be seen openly mocking each other, it was easy to know that they truly loved each other.  Even when dealing with poverty or obesity, these two remain upbeat and humorous.
§  Michael Schofield and Dr. Sara Tancredi were played by Wentworth Miller and Sarah Wayne Callies.  As the prison doctor, Sara assisted Michael and crew with escaping prison with the hopes that they would eventually be together.  Well after her being discharged and her murder exaggerated, Michael and Sara were finally reunited…never mind the fact that they were both on the lamb.
