Mighty Morphin Power Rangers turn 20!

It's MORPHIN TIME!

I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was unleashed on the world.  I was 9 when five “teenagers with attitude” changed my afternoons.  I remember thinking that I couldn’t tell anyone that I liked this show because it was so corny (even for 1993 standards) but I couldn’t pass up on the notion of seeing live action Voltron! Little did I know that this show would take off and would remain a huge topic of discussion at school every day.  Especially during the Green Ranger saga!  I hung on to Power Rangers longer than I expected due to my younger brother, but once the originals left the show it lost its appeal.

The greatest (or worst) feature of Power Rangers is their ever revolving cast and non-linear story arcs which have allowed the Power Rangers universe to live on and prosper.  Thanks to Netflix showing all of the previous Power Rangers’ my kids have now become addicted and with Nickelodeon premiering newer episodes, I can’t get away from those “teenagers with attitude!”
Ay, yi, yi Rangers! Congrats on the 20 years

GO GO POWER RANGERS!

NCAA ends relationship with EA Sports!

NCAA College Football is DEAD!

"By now, most fans will have heard that EA's licensing agreement with the NCAA is set to expire and that we have agreed to part ways. I'm sure gamers are wondering what this means...

But that doesn't mean that EA Sports will no longer produce college football games!

This is simple: EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks. Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports...

It was announced today that NCAA will no longer allow EA to use their likeness and logo for any video games.  This includes 2K, Tecmo, Sony, Microsoft or any other publisher for the foreseeable future.
What many gamers are unaware of is that each university, conference, division, and bowl game individually license their property to EA!  This means that EA, through Collegiate Licensing Company, will still be able to bring college football to the market.

We took big creative strides with this year's college game and you’ll see much more in the future. We love college football and look forward to making more games for our fans."

Now if I can just stop hearing people complain about exclusivity with sports game I would be one happy gamer!

The Tournament of Couples...The Jolie-Pitt region

In February, I wrote a post for Valentine’s Day about the greatest video game couples.  During that entire process I kept going back to and thinking about the best couples of all time.  But video games don’t necessarily have that many couples to merit a bracket tourney.  Well with the evolution of Apollo’s Gamedom on the horizon, I’m going to give you a sneak peak at what’s to come…here’s the Tournament of the Couples TV/Movie/Video game bracket tournament.

We’re going with a 64 couple single elimination tournament that YOU will be voting on each week starting today.  After each week, I will update the bracket accordingly and the voting will begin again and so on and so forth.

The couples were selected by my team of avid gamers and film/TV watchers; however the seedings were selected by me after arduous research and viewings.  In reality, I just picked the most popular and went from there, but it’s my tourney and I do as I please.  Even though many shows will live on forever through syndication, I’m only including couples from my generation as well.

SPOILERS to follow!
(AND YES IT HAS BEEN OVER A MONTH, BUT I WAS HAVING ISSUES WITH THE POLLS, BUT THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE)

THE JOLIE-PITT REGION

§  Mario and Peach are the OG's of video game love!  I mean forget bringing chocolates; Mario's willing to eat magic mushrooms, flowers, and feathers to save his love.  As a whole fellas we can't compare to Mario, but don't be afraid to follow suit and definitely don't be afraid to eat giant mushrooms so you can "grow!"  Mario has endured many a hater trying to steal his woman; a tie wearing gorilla, a giant fire-breathing tortoise, and an evil doppelganger.  But through and through Mario always comes to the rescue of his Peach.
Vs.
§  Alex and Whitney are currently played by Whitney Cummings and Chris D’Elia [EDITOR’S NOTE: Whitney was cancelled after season 2].  The reason the committee and I chose these two is solely because these two remind me of my relationship with my wife.  Their constant banter and wit is almost identical to that of my household, so that is the truth behind this inclusion.

§  Steve Urkel and Laura Winslow were played by Jaleel White and Kellie Shangnye Williams.  Urkel is the epitome of an underdog.  For years, Steve pledged his love for Laura but it was never reciprocated…well at least not for years and years.  First he went through a scientific makeover for her, which failed, and even tired dating other women, which also failed.  Finally, Laura realized that the man of her dreams was there from the beginning.  The moral of the story is that women don’t know what they want…but seriously Steve knew that he and Laura were meant to be and his determination leads to them finally getting engaged.
Vs.
§  David Silver and Donna Martin were played by David Austin Green and Tori Spelling.  High school relationships hardly ever last, but David and Donna were able to make it through the high school drama, the collegiate partying, and the corporate backstabbing to marry.

§  Jesse Katsopolis and Rebecca Donaldson-Katsopolis were played by John Stamos and Lori Loughlin.  Although initially guarded towards her feelings for Jesse, Rebecca finally gives in to her feelings.  Plus how many women can say to no to the front man of Jesse and the Rippers?  Plus any man willing to stay with his brother-in-law and help him raise his kids is A+ in my book!
Vs.
§  Spock and Nyota Ohura are being played by Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana.  Spock is half Vulcan-half human so if you think interracial dating is hard, try inter-species dating.

§  Phillip and Vivian Banks were played by James Avery and Janet Hubert-Whitten and Daphne Maxwell Reid.  As you can see Aunt Viv was played by two different actresses, but that didn’t diminish the power of the Banks’.   Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv was a major power couple in every single way (no matter the actress involved).
Vs.
§  Martin and Gina Payne were played by Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell.  No matter the situation, Gina always stuck by her man.  Even if he was getting knocked out by Tommy “Hitman” Hearns or bickering with her best friend, Pam, Gina took pride in her relationship.

§  Jerry Maguire and Dorothy Boyd were played by Tom Cruise and Renee Zellwiger.  Let’s just get it out there…Dorothy Boyd is a ride-or-die chick!  She left her FULL TIME job to help Jerry start up his agency.  She had me at quit “her FULL TIME job.”
Vs.
§  Rocky and Adrian Balboa were played by Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire.  Being married to a professional athlete is a job within itself, especially with one who gets punched repeatedly for a living.

§  Carl and Harriette Winslow were played by Reginald VelJohnson and Jo Marie Peyton.  Like most of the couples mentioned, C&H are great for each other in the way they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses.  This can be seen in their child rearing, household management, and dealing with Steve Urkel.  If not for Harriette, Carl would likely have killed Steve…and I’m sure he would’ve gotten away with it being a Chicago police officer.
Vs.
§  Commander Sheppard could be any of us and the romantic choices he makes are all based on the choices you make throughout your journey.  And honestly with all the options out in this game, fortunately there are no wrong choices.

§  Derwin Davis and Melanie Barnett-Davis were played by Pooch Hall and Tia Mowry.  Many young couples face numerous obstacles together; however, when you add in the rigors of becoming a pro football player, moving across country, and trying to become a doctor you’re almost asking for a disaster.  Fortunately, these two were able to find their balance as a couple and live their lives “normally ever after.”
Vs.
§  Women have a tendency to believe they have the power to change a man, luckily for Belle she did have that power.  Belle and the Beast have seen numerous incarnations, but no matter the form their unwavering love for each other is apparent.

§  Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski were played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen. Zack and Kelly had an on again-off again relationship throughout high school and college, but remained friends at all times.  Although at times it seemed as if they were destined for splitsville their love kept them close and they eventually married in Las Vegas during college.  I do wonder why no one ever questioned Zack about his cardboard cutout of Kelly…strange much!?!
Vs.
§  Cedric and Lovita were played by Cedric the Entertainer and Terri J. Vaughn.  Its always said that there is no one in the world for everyone and these two are the epitome of that!  To say that these two are a special kind of “special” would be an understatement; however, they’re perfect for each other.

Check out the winners of the first round in The Obama Region!

So your favorite team is who again???

LeBron James is the best player in the NBA currently, that’s a fact!  Anyone that wants to argue that can kick rocks…and I’m as far away from a LBJ fan there is.
You can call it “old school,” but I don’t root for individual players but shockingly I root for teams.  I don’t have problems with fans that root for players and whatever team they play for, but I do hate those fans that pretend like they’ve been riding with that team since the outset!  The people I’m talking about know who there are, if not…then you used to be a “Bulls” (Jordan), “76ers” (Iverson), “Lakers” (Kobe), “Cavaliers” (LBJ) fan in some order.

There aren’t any specific written rules to fanhood, unless we count the Bill Simmons’ Laws, so I obviously can’t tell you how to be a fan. But being obnoxious about any of it is just douche-baggy.
Throughout the NBA Finals, I’ve been seeing a huge swell in San Antonio fans, but they funny thing is these were the same people who were rooting on Golden State to pull off the upset!  Maybe I’m the one who’s being a douchebag about it all, but I can’t see myself flip-flopping with the wind.
Hell, every time The Rock went heel in the WWF/WWE, I didn’t care b/c he was my favorite.
I find myself without rooting interest in these Finals because the Heat knocked out my Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, but there is no way that I turn my allegiances to San Antonio even if it is for 7 games!
Paul George Dunks on Birdman (Animated GIF)
Analytically, I believe the Spurs will win (I stated in 6 from the outset) because the have the better overall team.  Am I rooting for the Spurs to win...nope, I just want exciting games no matter the victor.
The NBA’s a players league, but I’ll I’m asking is that you stop playing “eenie meenie miney mo” with your “teams!”

3 minds join to discuss Jay-Z's Samsung commercial

So last night during the NBA Finals, Jay-Z and Samsung unleashed a commercial/mini-documentary unveiling Jay-Z’s new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.  If you haven’t seen it here you go [for some reason I can't embed the video]:

For me, I just set back in awe at how Jay-Z has supplanted the idea of a hip-hop star.  Granted he along with the likes of Ice T, Ice Cube, Sean Combs, and Snoop (I refuse to call him Lion) Dogg, have long been seen as multifaceted stars, but Jay seems to never misstep any of his ventures.
I asked two of my friends how they felt watching the commercial and what I got was much more than I expected so I decided to post it for everyone to see.  Here’s what transpired:
Aaron:
I know you saw that Jay-Z commercial last night! I know Jay has superseded hip-hop but when you're using Samsung commercial/mini-documentary to unleash a new album...WOW!!!!!!!!
The Illuminati must be so proud j/k
Jonathan:
I saw it. I was at a loss when Samsung Galaxy came on the screen at the end. Further leads me to question Jay-Z's musical genius vs. willingness to be used as marketing ploy. I feel like the ratio has grown to 30-70. How old is he? About 45 yrs old?
Aaron:
WOW, really?!? I never EVER thought about it that way.  I'm more in the line of use them as much as they'll use you.  I would argue that Jay is a marketing genius more than a musical genius!  He was able to get Executive Producer credit on NBA 2K13 even with no form of discernible video game developing skills.  AND he just did the soundtrack for the Great Gatsby?  Why? I couldn't tell you.
Jamar:
I think it will benefit Samsung more than it will benefit Jay-Z which is why Samsung already bought 1 million copies. Imo I think its a dope idea other genres have been doing stuff like this for years time to step outside the box
Aaron:
I think that it will help Jay more! True, Samsung is giving out a free copy to Samsung Galaxy users, but that's only 1 million copies.  That's a lot, but I don't think that's going to make people, more specifically IPhone users, run and jump ship.  I think this helps Jay out the most easily.  People have been saying for a LONG time that Jay has fallen off and this gets people genuinely excited for his next album.
When's the last time the world was abuzz for a Jay album?  The Black Album?
Jamar:
yep I agree with that.  So Jay-Z is basically using Samsung as a pawn and a way to enable  a portion of the people who download via album leaks, torrents ect... and still manage to get paid which is key.  So maybe Jay-Z is the lone beneficiary lol

Jonathan:
Yeah, "I can't knock the hustle" as long as there is a purpose to the hustle. Get money with a purpose.  Hopefully at some point 100s of millions is a enough and you begin to place it back into the community at a high rate, so that other people will see it and follow that example. He's benefited more than anyone from the rise of hip-hop. People passed on and it got bigger. Execs said "How can we use this? Who can we use?" He said "Pay me and you can use me." 2K, the Nets, Live Nation, Drinks, apparel etc. Can't knock the hustle as long as there's a purpose, otherwise its using you. I didn't think of it this way until I saw that commercial last night though. I was like, "Are they highlighting him musically or his marketability?"
Aaron:
I wish I could argue his Robin Hood merits, but I truly don't know if he's contributing back to the community in need at a high rate.  We know about his contributions during 9/11, but I don't know if there's been anything since.  But if there has, we know that the media isn't going to highlight those contributions.  And this goes with pretty much all celebrities!  I think the difference though is that even if he's being used for his marketability; his name is still bigger than whatever he's marketing.  No one is saying, “did you see the new Samsung commercial with Jay-Z?”  So who's actually using who?
Jonathan:
He's getting money and his name is marketable, but what is his name worth? I tell people I know Aaron Love and if people know him too, they'll say "Yeah, Aaron, that's a good dude. Really helped me out when I needed it. Really steered me in the right direction." I know your pops but from what you've told me and my one interaction with him, I know he's got a good name. Before dropped that circle (inside joke), I was in here working all of those hours. Could have got it twisted thinking the cash flow had anything to do with my name. Thankfully I didn't.
Age old question. For you how much would be enough?
I really [sic] thinking this through and at first I said 100m is enough for me, but then I said 10m is enough.  Now I'm thinking that 1m is enough. No need to work. I could invest and live off the 100k yearly return. I'd say 2m to be safe. I could provide for my loved ones and take them on vacay. What is your number?
Aaron:
Here's the thing though, 1 mil would be amazing!  But you're telling me that you wouldn't work anymore or the work you did do you wouldn't charge?  I know that's not what you're saying, but I'm playing devil's advocate here.  With the rising costs of education, I don't see 1-2 million being enough.  If I had to say a number, I would say 10 mil would be enough.  But what do you do then? Obviously, I'm giving back...but then what?  I obviously would quit [removed company name] for 1 million, but I have to do something and is everything else just done pro bono? I don't like to do anything for free now, so if I had the ability to be paid and still remain a upstanding member of society, then CTC!!!
I get your point completely, but that's one thing that we can't measure b/c we can't go to Soundscans to see what Sean Carter has actually done without a marketing machine behind him.  Even the likes of Oprah and other celebrity philanthropist aren't getting every positive act done in the community reported b/c that's not what the media cares to report.
Its funny b/c I asked Nat this question in regards to Events by Love and initially she said having a sufficient number of brides so we could live comfortably.  Almost immediately, she switched it up and said she wants to take over the industry and become the go-to planner in the city.  And then she wants to venture out and teach and offer other services and use her name (and company name) to generate more revenue all while doing less.
Is this not what Jay is doing?
Jonathan:
This conversation is making me realize some things. Some for the first time, and some for the second and third.
Working here may have been one of the best things to happen for me. It's helped me devalue money. When I was working a lot, you being in my ear telling me to dip was key. Helped reinforce that the stress wasn't worth it. That Kanye, "Did you realize you were champion in their eyes" was hugely underrated. This reminds [sic] my father eventually started doing business and living partly in Maryland and maybe even Orlando. Even as recently as like 4 years ago he would talk about what he'd do when finally got "this money".  He's always talked more about money than anything else. To people that actually care about you the money doesn't matter, the time and effort does. If the love of money is the root of all evil then what is the endless pursuit?
I know the media doesn't report charitable contributions regularly. Recently found out that Steve Jobs family started a for profit business so that they could give money and it stay private.  Nonprofits have to report donors. That way they don't receive recognition. Which is truly altruistic. Just not sure if true sacrificial altruism exists in hip-hop and to what degree.
Kareem says all the time, "If money is moving you better make sure you're getting some." So yeah, if I'm generating money for some company than I'm getting my cut. The number is presuming you're nothing [sic] working. You find a suitcase.
Aaron:
The reason why I didn't text you last night about the commercial was b/c I knew (at least I hoped) you would bring some interesting insight besides "Jay-Z, Rick Rubin, Pharrell, Swizzy, Timbo all in the same room....FIYAH!!!!"
We mentioned before the Disease of More in relation to winning multiple championships, but the same disease comes with money as well. Money can't buy you happiness, it sure in the hell can buy you comfortabilty (is that even a word) which can make one happy to be comfortable financially.  But if you have nothing backing that...nothing to actually make you happy then the money is practically useless.
So to harken back to your original question, I think enough is when you start to measure money as a means of happiness.  I'm happy going home to Nat and the boys knowing that everything we NEED is handled.  Would I like more? Sure why not, but more wouldn't make me happier.
But just know that I'm searching for that aforementioned suitcase!

Dominating NBA big men are a thing of the past...or are they?!?!

Dr. Apollo discusses the big man situation in the NBA!

Shaq ATTACK!
I think it’s time we all agree that the days of NBA big men dominating the game is over (and has been for a while)!  Gone are the days of Shaquille O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Tim Duncan dictating the ebb and flow of the games and in particular the playoffs.
Shaq's playoff career numbers were 25.2 PPG, 12.1 RPG, and shot 56% from the floor.
Hakeem put up 25.9 PPG, 11.2 RPG, and 53% from the floor.
Duncan has averaged 23.3 PPG, 12.6 RPG, and has shot 50% during his playoff career and during this year’s playoffs Duncan is putting up 17.8 PPG and 11.2 RPG (with two sweeps) at the age of 37!
Take a look at the “bigs” from this year’s conference semifinals:

Roy Hibbert: 13.8 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 47% shooting
Tyson Chandler: 6.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 59% shooting
Joakim Noah: 10.8 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 44% shooting
Chris Bosh: 13.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 52% shooting
Andrew Bogut: 7.5 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 59% shooting
Serge Ibaka: 12.8 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 44% shooting
Marc Gasol 18.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 48% shooting
                                and his teammate
Zach Randolph: 19.7 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 51% shooting
Gasol/Randolph finished off the favored Thunder to advance to their 1st Western Conference Finals thanks to their 2 bruisers down low.  Duncan’s Spurs swept the Grizz and are now in the NBA Finals…so yeah, there’s that!
No matter how much the NBA changes, the goal is to still get the ball in the hoop in the most efficient way…which just happens to be really close to the basket.  Unless you employ the likes of LeBron James or Michael Jordan, acquiring a dominant big man is the key to rings.  Hence the reason the Spurs will be battling the Heat for the ship!
#jumphookem2death
Now finding said big man is another story in itself, especially when former Denver Nuggets Head coach  openly admits that his best post player was 6’ 2” Andre Miller!
Birdman DOWN!
Before you even jump and yell about Roy Hibbert torching the Heat, just know that everyone, including Roy, didn’t see this kind of play coming from him.  Roy only averaged 11.9 PPG and 8.3 RPG in the regular season and against the Heat those numbers ballooned to 21.4 PPG and 10.8 RPG, due in large part to the Heat throwing Chris Bosh, Chris “Birdman, Birdman” Anderson, and Udonis Haslem at him.  But watching Roy come of age was like watching a rose blossom in the desert…unexpected.

No matter how you swing it, big men dominating in the paint are turning into the days of yore.

George Mikan

Small ball has effectively changed the way teams view big men…essentially relegating the bigs to specialty roles.  Can you rebound? Can you spread the floor? Can you protect the rim? Can you switch on pick and rolls and play a smaller man?  If you’re able to do one of these roles, then you can find yourself employed by many of the small ball teams; however, if you’re able to do at least two of these then you’re looking at a pretty payday.

The OKC Thunder rolled the dice and lost BIG time by deciding to keep Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins over James Hardin!  We know how this played out…Hardin goes to Houston (and gets PAID) and the Thunder lost their hold of the West (yes Westbrook’s knee injury hurt them as well)!

Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, and Al Jefferson were the three highest paid big men in the NBA this year and only the Lakers made it into the playoffs and they were swept by the Spurs.  This isn’t to say that these guys are bad and not worth the money (Philly fans might disagree since Bynum never played a single game for them), but discovering the Ark was even difficult for Indiana Jones.
Many of the best teams in NBA don't have a traditional center becuase they've mastered the small ball mentality and would much rather take advantage of the corner 3's and slash and kick instead of the traditional back to the basket bruisers of yesteryear.

NBA big men may not garner the same level of reverence as before, but their importance is seen in other variables on the court!

Steve Urkel...A Fashion Icon?!?!?

Steven. Q. Urkel.
Steve Urkel was the 90’s. Period. Point. Blank.
Jaleel White’s Steve went from a one time guest spot to lead role in TGIF/ABC’s Family Matters (which could’ve also been called Black Full House).
Even though Urkel’s popularity swelled throughout the years, he was still a nerd of legend! Stereotypical large glasses, tight jeans, suspenders, and pocket protector were standard fare for Steve and not once did America look at him as a teen heartthrob or fashion icon.  This all makes sense because Steve first appeared in December 1989!

Fast forward 24 years to 2013, and you realize Urkel was just a man way ahead of his time.  Just think about it…chic geek is an incredibly popular style right now!  If the Steve Urkel’s character was around today, he would have his own clothing line a la Russell Westbrook’s Levi Collection.

These are what Steve Urkel specs looked like:

In ’89 these things were a joke!  In 2013, you have stars such as Dwyane Wade, Justin Timberlake, and Selena Gomez willingly rocking the large framed-rims.

That’s not all!  Urkel was wearing skinny jeans before skinny jeans even knew about skinny jeans.  Back then they were just considered tight ass jeans though!
Now if you go into almost any retail store, skinny jeans are commonplace.  Even the suspenders are acceptable in common garb.

Now I’m not here to hate on the chic geek trend, but it’s only appropriate to recognize the brilliance that is Steven Q Urkel… a man ahead of his time.

But even the Urk Man wouldn't be caught dead wearing this nonsense!
